Holiday Visitor Prep

We’re both from very large families, and consequently we always seem to have someone stopping by our house for the holidays. This may mean a few hours, or sometimes it’s letting our new guest bathroom see some actual visitors for a night or two! Often, we have an evening event turn into an unexpected overnight visit due to snow or other circumstances.

I think the worst thing that can happen as a guest is realizing you’re staying somewhere and you’ve forgotten some toiletries that can make a huge difference in your life! No one likes not being able to brush their teeth, running out of shampoo, or having to ask the hostess for more toilet paper because you’re dealing with an empty roll. A lot of that falls on us as the hosts- really, the least we can do is be stocked up on toilet paper and make our guests feel comfortable with easy access!

We try to save our guests the embarrassment, discomfort, or sudden trip to a store by staying stocked up on basics- particularly around the holidays.

If you plan on hosting anything this holiday season (or any other time for that matter) I’d highly recommend an extra package of toilet paper in an easy to find place and a basket with a few toiletries to make guests feel comfortable.

A few must-have items include:

– Toilet paper
– A spare toothbrush
– Toothpaste
– Feminine products (like Always pads or Tampax tampons)
– Shampoo
– Conditioner
– Soap/body wash
– A razor
– A comb/travel brush

This is when our Costco membership really gets some use- it saves us a lot of time and money to have our spare cupboards full of the essentials we know we’ll go through without having to make multiple trips to the store.

Particularly feminine products (seriously, we have lots of teenage nieces) and toilet paper (we have lot of teenage boys too 馃檪 ). We find these items on opposite corners of the store by the paper goods and the pharmacy.

A little preparation and a full cupboard go a long way in making sure guests know they are welcome and feel comfortable!

I’d love to hear, what’s the worst thing you’ve forgot when staying overnight somewhere? Mine was my entire bag of makeup on my honeymoon- yikes!

  1. I know how much I appreciate it when I'm staying somewhere and they have baskets like this. I know I've forgotten my toothbrush/toothpaste and feminine products before. #client
