Breakfast in Bed + Taro Gomi Date

Be Sure to Pin This Idea!

Thanks for putting up with a billion getaway pictures, we had a great time and I really do think getaways are an important part of happy relationships! However, I think it’s time to get back to some date ideas, and let me tell you this one was definitely under the creative date ideas umbrella! I have so many friends ask for at-home date ideas since most of them have children and live on a budget which doesn’t always allow for a babysitter each week. This and the combination of crazy AZ heat have made us limited to activities that don’t give us heatstroke have sparked a few ideas to enjoy in our home, in the joy of air conditioning (thank you Willis Haviland Carrier– AZ owes you big)!

Last year we started some crazy home make-overs due to the fact that our home is about the age of our parents (only a few years from retirement!) and hasn’t been updated since then. I’ve posted the kitchen, but not some of the other rooms we’ve worked on due to the fact some are missing curtains or maybe need pictures hung. I’m getting there- we’re in the process of refinancing our home due to wicked-awesome mortgage rates right now, so we’ve been fixing up and finalizing rooms that were mostly done and not quite finished. I will update with pictures from start to finish soon! However, I’m giving you a sneak peak into one of our favorite rooms that I tackled last summer. I’d like to introduce you to 2/3rds of our bedroom: Readers meet 2/3rds Camille and Jacob’s bedroom, Bedroom- blog readers.

I spent a lot of time painting the oak tree mural last summer, from the template I bought from the talented Jen. Between this, the amazing quilt made by Jacob’s extremely talented mom, and some furniture we splurged on, we fell in love with our bedroom. However, we don’t give this room enough credit and I decided it was time to spend a date hanging out in our bedroom. That’s when the breakfast in bed date idea was born! In only 4 easy steps you can have a pretty cheap and awesome breakfast-in-bed date in the comfort of your own home!

Step 1: Fall in love with bedroom as a place to hang out, not just to sleep
Step 2: Come up with a killer breakfast idea to make together for dinner

Stuffed french toast always is a no-fail fancy breakfast I’m glad I discovered a few years ago.

Here’s our recipe if you want to duplicate:
Ingredients: Loaf of french bread, package of cream cheese, eggs, milk, cinnamon, sugar, fresh berries

Directions: Preheat a griddle to 350. In a food processor add the package of cream cheese, a pinch of sugar, and about half a package of at least 2 kinds of berries. Blend that well, this will become your filling.

Then slice your french bread into about 2 inch pieces. In each piece cut an opening to look like a pocket on just the top part- be sure not to cut all the way through. It will look like this.

Blend about 2-3 eggs with 1/3rd cup of milk, a pinch of sugar, and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. Place in a shallow dish or plate.
Take the filling and stuff it inside the bread pockets. When all are full take the bread and dip each side into the egg mixture carefully so you don’t spill the filling. Place on the griddle (you may need to spray with non-stick spray before doing this). Each side will take about 3-5 minutes, just watch so that the egg is cooked and it no longer looks wet. There should be some browning- that also lets you know it’s done.

Flip with a spatula and cook the other side.
Top with syrup and fresh berries, and enjoy the best french toast of your life!

Step 3: Take your breakfast for dinner to your bed and enjoy breakfast-in-bed together

Step 4: Find an activity to share together (don’t worry, this is blog appropriate :)!!!)
I had a goodbye party with my 4 generations of yearbook staffs in my teaching career in AZ a few weeks ago, and one of the coolest students tipped me off to Taro Gomi activity books.

I have to praise her as possibly one of the smartest students I’ve ever encountered, and definitely one of the more creative. She told me these books were essentially designed to spark creativity in children and help them think instead of just mindlessly coloring. She showed me a few of the books and said she’s used them to entertain herself when she feels her creativity is low. I instantly thought “perfect out-of-the-box date idea!” and went home and ordered one off Amazon. (Side note- I accidentally ordered Scribbles, which was still great, but I meant to get Squiggles which I thought was a lot more funny and with greater potential for date creativity)  I made Jacob wait to open the package he kept asking about until the night of the date.

And I’m giving you fair warning that your date may look at you like this when they are first introduced to the activity

This is definitely not posed, he gave me this look right after opening. It took a little while to get him to buy into the idea that this was going to be fun and funny. I let him choose the first page to complete together. He did a very engineer-type page with not a lot of creativity. But it got us going and helped us channel all our elementary-coloring-rockstar glory days again.

Once we completed this one, it was my turn to choose a page. I choose this one:

Which I knew would start the creative juices. And it did not disappoint!
If you’re a Seinfeld fan you will certainly recognize the pirate shirt inspiration came from

I wrongly thought I was the creative one, Jacob pulled out this

Which we laughed and laughed about. Can you tell he’s detail-oriented?
Then Jacob chose our next one, finally in the spirit and enjoying the activity.

I came up with this

But couldn’t stop laughing at Jacob’s. The man has no fear when it comes to any bug, even scorpions which my parents are blessed to have in plenty around (and sometimes in) their house. The second he sees a cockroach he goes running. He served a 2 year mission in Bolivia where he learned that some breeds of cockroaches fly. He has never fully recovered.

I’d love to share more, but the one downside to having a date in your bed when you’re busy people is your body will only last so long before you just fall asleep. Luckily there were no colored pencil imprints in our faces when we woke up a few hours later. And when nieces/nephews come over hopefully we will finally have something for them to play with!
