Why Ice Skating Makes Such a Great Date

Ice skating is such a fantastic way to add some fun to your dating life! It’s a great first date, second date, or millionth date.

It’s also a great time for beginners and seasoned skaters who show up with their own skates alike! If you know what you’re doing, it’s the perfect opportunity to show your skills. But we’ve had lots of fun each time we do this date night, and we’re far from professional skaters! In fact, it takes both of us plenty of time to even glide forwards.

Even if you’re a first-timer, you’re bound to have some good laughs and plenty of fun while you lace up those rental skates and step on the edge of the rink.

There’s something nostalgic about dressing in warm clothes, putting on gloves, tying up those laces, and enjoying a fun activity that makes you feel like a kid again. Plus it encourages some hand-holding and plenty of fun. And that joy makes an ice skating date a fantastic date night!

When to Go Ice Skating for Date Night: The Perfect Time to Go

There are two times during the year that I think ice skating is the ideal date. The first is during winter. This is when you just need to remind yourself there are fun things about the cold and that you need to enjoy the season instead of curse it. That may mean Christmas, but that often means January/February to me. It’s a great winter date idea!

Perhaps I love it even more when I’m tired of the hottest month(s) of summer and don’t think I can take another sweaty day. Those are extra bad in Arizona. But I know that there are times and seasons almost everywhere when you’ve survived a heat wave and want a reminder that cold exists in the world!

We love to bundle up in cold months, or bring a jacket and actually wear jeans and layers to an indoor ice rink in the hot months.

The most important thing is that it sounds like a fun activity, and there’s not bad time of the year to go.

How To Make an Ice Skating Date Happen

The first step is to find the best rink for your date in your area. If you’re a New Yorker, one may argue skating through Central Park is never a bad idea should be on your bucket list! There’s a reason it makes it into so many movies!

But you don’t have to live in a big city to make a great ice skating night happen.

Start by finding an open skate time at our local ice arena. Sometimes that means some great outdoor ice that’s safe to skate on. Often you’ll find pop up ice skating you can make a reservation and enjoy during the holidays. But often you’ll find indoor skating rinks are open year round and have open skating hours on set nights. Find one and head out for a really fun date

Romantic Date Night

I feel like ice skating is one of those perfect dates that has it all. You can hold your date’s hand romantically the entire time.

There’s nostalgia for all the former school events, birthday parties, or family activities on the ice. I mean did you ever attend a junior high event and have a stranger come to ask you to skate with them? It’s like all the awkward tingles but with adults ready to just hold hands and cuddle up in between skating sessions.

You can laugh your head off at your lack of ability or your significant other’s lack of ability and enjoy the missteps, shaky moments, and sometimes even falls.

Plus, if you grab a cup of hot chocolate together afterward, you’ve officially reached Hallmark movie status for date night!

We love getting a little goofy and pushing/pulling each other, seeing if we can pose in iconic ways, or pretending we have the skills to do anything without almost falling.

Plus, you can snuggle up when you’re absolutely freezing. That’s why it’s a good first date to test some chemistry and see if they prefer to snuggle up to you or their down jacket.

Also, It’s a fun spectator sport when you’re ready to get off the ice for a few minutes. Nobody said you had to skate the entire time! Sometimes it’s fun just to people watch and enjoy others trying their best not to fall on the ice.

It has the perfect blend of music, ice games, and entertainment. But also, there are plenty of quiet moments to have some really great conversations.

Plus it lets you know your significant other’s level of consideration when they offer to tie your skate up tighter so your ankles don’t hurt.

Active Date Idea

Another reason you’ll love ice skating for date night is it’s active, without being too active. Oh, how science tells us that endorphins help us feel more love. And that’s why we’ll always be champions of active dates that get the blood flowing and the endorphins moving.

It’s just one of those easy dates to remind me why you love being around your lover (or new acquaintance)!

And I mentioned holding hands, but we’ll always be a fan of dates where we just get to be together and hold each other’s hands. There’s something so sweet about experiences that facilitate fun, romance, and plenty of quality time to talk. And an ice skating date happens to be about the perfect date night to fill all of the above!

Great minds think alike! – skating is best when you first get a nice cold snap or during a heat wave in the summer to cool you down. Skating is also the perfect romantic date night.

  3. “Hard to photograph yourself” is right! I was going to ask who took all the lovely shots! That looks like a lot of fun 🙂 I was pregnant last winter, so I’m hoping I get a chance to go ice skating with #husbae this year!

Pregnancy definitely puts a damper on strapping thin metal skates on and gliding around! I hope you get to go this year!
