Ghostbusters Family Costume

We go all out for family Halloween costumes every year! I keep a list of Halloween costume ideas all year, and on July 5th we meet as a family, bring up all our ideas, and let the family vote on our favorite. We get to work early sometimes DIYing pieces, ordering items, and planning a unique location to take pictures at so each detail is covered. 

After keeping a secret for months and months, I’m so excited to reveal this year’s costume theme!

We have more Photoshop than we’ve ever had, and I think it’s just all so fun!

Our kindergartner fell in love with the Ghostbusters song this year, and became obsessed with the fictional idea that scientists could create a way to capture ghosts. Even though he’d never seen a movie, he insisted this would be the coolest family costume you could ever dream of.

Admittedly, I have actually hoarded this idea for a family Halloween costume for years. But I was holding out through years of secondary infertility in case we ever had more kids. I always wanted to make a baby the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or Slimer. But we’re grateful after years of infertility that we got our two boys, and can complete the classic four. So it was time to accept four people is plenty to pull off a great Ghostbusters costume, and it’s one my kindergartner really wanted this year.

Peter Venkman Costume

Admittedly, we broke down and let our boys watch the movie before we shot our costumes. Our oldest had nightmares, our youngest fell in love. Our little guy immediately wanted to be Peter Venkman, because he loved that Bill Murray made him seem like the leader and the “grouchy and funny one.”

Peter is the easiest to pull off! He wears the classic jumpsuit, carries a proton pack, and pulls a few silly faces in every Ghostbusters photo shoot there ever was.

Ray Stantz Costume

Our oldest son loved Dan Aykroyd’s character for not only being a smart scientist, but for having a silly side. He was a little afraid of the movie, but decided the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man a la Ray was the comic relief the movie needed!
Ray often carried extra equipment, so we’d highly recommend a few bonus chords, some goggles, random old electronics, and extra cords hanging from his backpack.

Egon Spengler Costume

The original inventor played by Harold Ramis is perfect for anyone, but particularly a fun time for those with glasses. My husband just got them last year, and we knew he’d be the perfect Egon!
A jumpsuit, proton pack backpack, glasses, and if you have enough hair to make it stand up, and you’re set to be the perfect Egon from Ghostbusters!

Winston Zeddemore Ghostbusters Costume

I know I’m biased as the one who got to be Winston, but we saved the best for last! Ernie Hudson made Winston the character he is! Even as a kid, he was always my favorite Ghostbuster as the voice of reason with plenty of well-timed jokes. All you need is your Ghostbusters jumpsuit, a Proton Pack, and a skeptical look to rock Winston! Adding some black gloves helps too. And Winston often carried the Ghost trap.
