Jedi Costume: Star Wars Family Costume
We go all out for family Halloween costumes every year! I keep a list of Halloween costume ideas all year, and on July 5th we meet as a family and bring up all our ideas and let the family decide on our favorite. We get to work early sometimes DIYing pieces, sometimes ordering items so each detail is covered.
After keeping a secret for months and months, I’m so excited to reveal this year’s costume theme!
Choosing a Family Costume Theme
You may be surprised to hear this year’s annual Whiting Family Halloween Costume came not from my son, but from his mom! I knew a costume like this would be inevitable one day, but I wanted to add a twist to the classic.
We wait until the day after the 4th of July for everyone to share their ideas. And if I’m being honest, most of them come from me, including a full list of ideas I’ve had all year with many to choose from. Last year, my son chose Peter Pan and we all loved letting him have the spotlight! I went first with ideas this year, and the moment I said this as the first theme option, everyone got so excited!
My oldest son even said, “No need to share anymore, that’s it!” Seriously, my kids dropped all their plans and knew this twist of a theme within a theme would be the perfect family costume. They also stopped me from sharing any more ideas.
So without further adieu, the Whiting Family Halloween Costume 2022 is…

The force is strong with this family…
Jedi Costumes
Star Wars family costumes and Star Wars group costumes are always a great idea! I mean who doesn’t recognize characters and outfits from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away? But with so many new Star Wars series and characters, we knew it would be fun to do a twist on the original trilogy and classic Star Wars characters we all love that are grouped together every Halloween season. So I came up with a different theme and a fun twist for a family Star Wars costume.
Since each of our family members resemble a Jedi Knight, we opted to transcend space and time and pull our own Jedi order together for Halloween this year. We figured the theme worked, even if some of these characters never existed in the same time frame.
Let’s start with the perfect Star Wars costume for the little boy who may be Star War’s biggest fan.
Luke Skywalker Costume
Costume Sources: Tan Pants / Tan Shoes / Karate Top / Lightsaber
For this costume, we did a full DIY! In fact, it’s has its own post because there are a lot of little details in his accessories, but it’s surprisingly easy and inexpensive to create your own DIY Luke Skywalker costume!
This boy adores Luke and has read every Star Wars book he can get his hands on to learn of the adventure of this most famous Jedi. Of all our favorite Star Wars characters, we knew Luke had to be a staple and the key character to make our little boy’s dreams come true.
When we let him look through the pictures he grinned from ear to ear. It made this entire costume so worth it! Leaning into your kid’s passions, particularly for a Halloween costume seems to always be a good idea!
Master Yoda Costume
Costume Source: Full Costume / Yoda Lightsaber
My kids like most are currently obsessed with Grogu, aka Baby Yoda. We chose this theme before Jacob and I finished the Mandalorian, and I had my concerns about formally casting Grogu as a Jedi just yet. Luckily, we were able to show our little guys Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back as well as Return of the Jedi. My son fell in love with Master Yoda and his ability to use a lightsaber. From there, he was convinced a Yoda costume for the shortest family member is a great choice in a Jedi costume roundup!
He also fell in love with his pouty lip, and made sure it was documented in our family Star Wars costume photo shoot! This may be my favorite picture!
It took some work to find this costume, but I’m so grateful we were able to grab this soft, darling Yoda costume with a hood instead of a mask. My tip is to do an image search through Google when you find one you love. I was able to find a specialty seller and get this one!
Rey Costume

Rey Star Wars Costume Tutorial
I just love Rey as a character, and she felt like the right choice for a female Jedi costume. Surprisingly, I had a bit of a challenge finding a great adult Rey costume that looked like Jedi Rey that wasn’t an arm and a leg. So I looked into hiring a seamstress who specializes in character costumes. I took a risk and placed a big order back in August. When it arrived in only a few weeks, I was so impressed! She nailed every detail and looks just like the Last Jedi white costume!
I loved that she had Rey’s entire outfit available! The variety of fabrics and layers are so impressive! You can even order a custom size so you know it will fit!
I was able to order her exact belt, pants, and even those perfect arm bands which both zip up and use velcro to stay in place.
I mean this costume not only looks great, but it also’s great quality and I’m ready to fight a galactic civil war knowing it will stay in place!
Obi-Wan Kenobi Costume:
Costume Sources: Full set linked here. / Eyeliner pencils to create the beard
I have to admit, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan in Star Wars Episodes one-three is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars characters! And watching the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ has been a treat this year! We loved it!
Jacob happens to look a bit like Obi-Wan after the Clone Wars, so we knew it was perfect for him!
Obi-Wan was easy to find due to the series’ popularity. I ordered an Amazon costume that came quickly and fit well! We were grateful for easy availability since the other costumes all took some DIY and serious searching.
My husband added a faux beard using three different eyeliner pencils. Grab a white, deep brown, and lighter brown for layering effects. Or grow the beard yourself if you don’t mind facial hair like my husband does.
Jedi Costume Essentials:
- Lightsaber
Let me tell you, we almost built the perfect yellow lightsaber at Disneyland to embody Rey. However, I decided grabbing the Jedi training lightsabers in blue from Shop Disney was the way to go! They are really solid, they light up, and they make sound effects and vibrating effects. We owned two already, so grabbing two more was a great choice! - Jedi Robes.
These are essentially a robe with an attached hood, and they’re typically a rich brown to be part of the Jedi Order. Disney sells really high quality ones, but you can order inexpensive ones in all sizes very easily. - Tunics
For Luke we grabbed a karate top. The rest of our costumes came with a tunic. - Brown or Black pants
- Brown belts
- Boots
- Leather wristbands/arm sleeves
- Small leather pooch or holsters to go on belts
If you’re loving this idea and theme within a Star Wars Family costume, and want to create a Jedi Costume, here’s a roundup of Jedi Knights you could easily be.
Jedi Knight Costumes
- Yoda
- Luke Skywalker
- Qui Gan Gin
- Mace Windo
- Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Ahsoka Tano
- Rey Costumes
- Princess Leia/General Leia

Dark Jedi: Jedi Knights Who Turned to the Dark Side
The Dark Side is very powerful, and claims some of the strongest Jedi Knights! If you want a little Sith inspiration, and the ability to yield a red lightsaber, these are excellent costume ideas!
- Darth Vader
- Anakin Skywalker
- Count Doku
- Reva Sevander / the Third Sister
- Darth Revan
- Kylo Ren
- Darth Maul
And if you’re like cool, love the theme but I’m happy to go with a more general Star Wars costume idea, we have you covered! Here are a bunch of other characters that would be perfect for a Star Wars group costume.
Additional Star Wars Group Costume Ideas:
- Princess Leia Costumes
- Han Solo

This was definitely my son’s favorite costume. Everyone had a great time getting into character, and making our family Jedi costume dreams come true!
